HMore Magazine recently published an article about Team Staan – CTS GROUP. Our new speed skating team brings together experienced skaters and young talents under the leadership of head coach Ian Steen and assistant coach Hein Otterspeer. What unites them is the shared belief that top performances can only be achieved in an environment where enjoyment, trust and personal growth are central. “We truly carry this together,” says Ian.
Elite sport is demanding enough
Head coach Ian Steen is no stranger to the world of speed skating. After years working within the KNSB structure, he identified a gap between the top teams and the talents just below that level. With Team Staan – CTS GROUP, he aims to bridge that gap. His approach is people-focused: personal attention, room to make mistakes and growing together. With the support of CTS GROUP, which shares the same vision on development, the team was officially presented in October.
Investing in talent and trust
After a long career at the highest international level, Hein Otterspeer made the transition into coaching earlier this year. His direct working style, technical expertise and experience as an elite athlete are a valuable addition to the team. Otterspeer focuses on tailor-made coaching: what does each athlete need individually to improve? Technique, relaxation and efficiency are key.
The collaboration between Ian Steen and Hein Otterspeer feels natural. While Steen focuses on structure, communication and the overall process, Otterspeer brings hands-on experience from life at the top of elite sport. Together, they provide clarity, trust and intensive guidance for the athletes, both on and off the ice.
Athletes grow together
Within Team Staan – CTS GROUP, young talents and experienced skaters train side by side, inspiring one another. Skater Amber Duizendstraal highlights the strong team spirit: improving together, supported by clear coaching and a positive atmosphere. The balance between performance and enjoyment helps her work purposefully towards her sporting goals.
The first results confirm the chosen approach. Nearly all skaters improved their performances compared to last season, and the team has already secured a silver medal and multiple World Cup tickets. The foundation is in place, and ambitions for the future are high.
